The co-op

A vegan cafe and community space, owned and run by the people who work in it.

Cafe Kino is a vegan cafe and community space at 108 Stokes Croft, Bristol. It is a workers’ co-operative: there is no boss, the people who work there run it together, and as a not-for-profit any money made goes back into the cafe for customers and staff.

The kitchen is 100% free of animal ingredients. Burgers, salads, dressings, relishes, mayonnaise and dips are made from scratch, the bean burgers use British-grown badger beans, and most of the produce is sourced locally. Coffee is fairtrade and organic from a Bristol roaster, and loose-leaf tea comes in a pot.

Kino began as pop-up cafe nights in Bristol and Cardiff in the late 1990s, became a co-op in 2004, opened on Ninetree Hill in 2006 and moved across the road to Stokes Croft in 2010, into a building that had stood empty for decades. Local artists hang their work on the walls, and the basement hosts music, talks, workshops and meetings.

Who supplies the kitchen

  • Badger beans grown in Britain

    For the homemade bean burgers.

  • A local wholefood co-op

Most of the dry ingredients come from another Bristol co-operative.

  • A Bristol roaster

    Fairtrade, organic coffee beans.

  • A specialist tea trader

Loose-leaf teas from rooibos to jasmine, served in a pot.

Food waste and everything else that can be recycled is recycled.
